5 Minutes Keigo Day 3 - The Respectful Request and the ている‑Form
Geschrieben von flups am🎯 Goal: Today you’ll learn two especially practical Sonkeigo patterns you can already use confidently with your N5 toolkit:
- 🟦 The respectful request using お+stem+ください
- 🟨 The polite description of an action or state using お+stem+です
🟦 The respectful request
Normally, we use てください to ask friends or acquaintances to do something:
ちょっとまってください! – Please wait a moment.
But when speaking respectfully to someone above you, we say:
おまちください! – Please wait.
👉 Take the masu‑stem (or the stem of a suru‑verb), add お or ご, and attach ください.
This is very similar to the pattern you learned for forming regular Sonkeigo verbs.
📚 Examples
| Verb | Normal Request | Respectful Request | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| まつ | まってください | おまちください | Please wait ⏳ |
| れんらくする | れんらくしてください | ごれんらくください | Please contact me 📞 |
⚠️ A word of warning
Not every verb works well with this pattern. For example, using すわる (“to sit down”) would give you おすわりください. However, you normally wouldn’t say this to an adult — it sounds far too much like the command you give a dog to “sit.”
In customer‑facing or service settings, the natural and polite expression is:
どうぞおかけください。
This is the standard respectful request meaning “Please have a seat,” and it’s the form you’ll hear in real‑world hospitality and business contexts.
🔍 The verb form ください
ください is the imperative form of くださる, the honorific counterpart of くれる (“to give to me”).
This means that when we use てください, we are already using a Keigo form — it has simply become so common that most people no longer perceive it as Keigo.
📌 Addition to the Day 1 table:
| Plain | Masu | Sonkeigo | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| くれる | くれます | くださいます | to give to me 🎁 |
Important: You may use くれる and くださいます only when you are the recipient.
🟨 The respectful ている‑form
A quick reminder: the ている form has two main functions:
- It describes an action currently in progress — similar to the English present progressive (e.g., 食べている, “I’m eating”).
- With change‑of‑state verbs, it describes the resulting state (e.g., けっこんしている, “to be married”).
In the Day 1 table, you learned that the Sonkeigo form of いる is いらっしゃいます. You can therefore replace ている with ていらっしゃいます:
しゃちょう、たなかさまが おまっていらっしゃいます。
Boss, Mr. Tanaka is waiting for you.
👉 Again, the verb is made polite with お.
Instead of ていらっしゃいます, you can use a shorter, very common everyday form. Take the masu‑stem (or suru‑stem), add お or ご, and attach です:
しゃちょう、たなかさまが おまちです。
Boss, Mr. Tanaka is waiting for you.
Note: The です here is part of the formula — it is not replaced with でいらっしゃいます.
⚠️ Special form for しっています
For しっています (“to know”), there is a dedicated honorific form:
しゃちょう、たなかさまを ごぞんじですか。
→ Boss, do you know Mr. Tanaka?
ごぞんじです is usually listed as an independent Sonkeigo verb. We can add it to our table:
| Plain | Masu | Sonkeigo | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| しっている | しっています | ごぞんじです | to know 🧠 |
→ Tip: Learn this as an additional vocabulary item!
📝 Exercise: Which respectful form fits?
1. おきゃくさま、こちらに ________. (please have a seat)
2. しゃちょう、ロビーで たなかさまが ________. (is currently waiting)
3. せんせいは ほんを ________. (is reading)
4. おきゃくさま、すぐに ________. (please hurry)
5. しゃちょう、たなかさまを ________か. (do you know him?)
6. せんせいは にほんごを ________. (is studying)
